Question 1

How do I start planning a trip to Iceland?

Accepted Answer

Start with six decisions in order: when you are coming, how long you have, who is travelling, your rough budget, whether you drive or take tours, and where you base yourself. Everything else, the stops, the tours, the packing, follows from those. Do not start with an itinerary.

Question 2

Is it too late to plan an Iceland trip a month before?

Accepted Answer

No. A month is enough. Book the car and accommodation first because those sell out, then leave the daily plan loose. Weather changes plans here more than any itinerary does.

Question 3

Do I need a day by day itinerary for Iceland?

Accepted Answer

No, and a tight one usually backfires. Wind, rain, and road closures move plans regularly. Plan the fixed things, car, beds, flights, and keep one spare day. Decide each morning using the road and weather conditions.

Question 4

I am anxious about driving and getting stranded in Iceland. What should I do?

Accepted Answer

Stay in the south and west rather than attempting the full Ring Road, keep driving days under three hours, and check vedur.is for weather, road.is for road conditions, and the Can I Drive Today tool each morning. Most anxiety here comes from over scheduling, not from Iceland itself.
