- Under 15 m/s (34 mph): normal driving. Open car doors with both hands.
- 15 to 20 m/s (34 to 45 mph): campervans, roof tents and small cars should avoid exposed roads.
- Over 20 m/s (45 mph): stay off open roads in any car.
- Lokað sign: the road is closed. Do not drive past it.

How windy is too windy to drive in Iceland?
Above about 15 m/s, driving gets hard, especially in a camper or a small car. Above 20 m/s, stay put. Gusts matter more than the average, and doors can be ripped off when you open them.
Is the Ring Road open today?
Most days, yes. Short stretches close in storms, often in the east and north. Type the nearest town above, or check road.is for the full map.
What does a yellow weather warning mean for my drive?
It means take care, not panic. Many people still drive, slowly and with extra time. Orange means rethink the drive. Red means do not travel.
Can I drive in Iceland in the dark?
Yes, roads are the same, but ice is harder to see and there are few lights outside towns. Plan to arrive before dark on your first days.
What should I do if the road closes while I am driving?
Turn back to the last town or petrol station and wait. Closures usually lift within hours. Never drive past a closure gate, it voids your rental insurance.
