South Coast Iceland: what to see, where to stay, and how to drive it

The mistake almost everyone makes

Treating the South Coast like a checklist to clear in one day. Reaching Jökulsárlón and getting back to Reykjavík is possible on paper. In reality it means hours of weather exposed driving, skipping every stop in between, and often finishing in the dark wondering what you actually saw.

The honest choice before you leave: one day for a taste, or two days to actually enjoy it. Everything on this page, fuel, food, sleep, depends on that single decision.

What you will actually see

Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara, Vík, Skaftafell, Jökulsárlón

Roughly west to east, the things people drive out here for. Most are close to the road. A few ask more of you.

Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss (waterfalls)

The first two big stops, both roadside with car parks. Seljalandsfoss is the one you can walk behind, expect to get wet and watch your footing on the wet path. Skógafoss is the broad, powerful one with a long staircase to a viewpoint if you have the legs for it. Both car parks are paid, see parking at Seljalandsfoss for the cost and how the camera lot works.

Reynisfjara (the black sand beach)

Near Vík. Beautiful, and genuinely dangerous. The sneaker waves here have killed people. There is a real warning section further down this page. Read it before you stand anywhere near the water.

Walking and access: the car park is close to the beach, and you can see the basalt columns and the stacks from the covered viewpoint by the restaurant without walking onto the sand. Past that point it is loose black sand and rounded pebbles, which is hard going with a stick, a frame or wheels.

Vík and the cliffs

The natural one day turnaround point for most people, a small village with fuel, food, and a church on the hill. The sea cliffs and stacks here are the postcard view.

Skaftafell and the glacier (Vatnajökull)

Further east, the gateway to glacier hikes and ice caves. These are guided activities, not something to wander onto alone. Glaciers are not safe to walk on without a guide and equipment.

Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach (glacier lagoon)

The far end for a normal trip, icebergs drifting in a lagoon and washing up on the black sand opposite. This is the spot people underestimate the drive to. It rewards staying overnight nearby far more than racing there and back.

Beating the crowds, and the quieter stops

Arrive before 9:30 or after 18:00. Five quieter stops nearby

Worth saying plainly: the crowds on the South Coast are not the South Coast. They are four or five named car parks. The buses run a tight window, roughly 10am to 4pm, so even Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss feel calm if you arrive before about 9:30 in the morning or after about 6 in the evening. In summer the light is with you late, so an evening visit is often the quiet one. Everything in between the famous stops is already empty.

A few quieter stops sit right beside the route, good to know about rather than detours into nowhere. This is resident knowledge, not an official listing, so treat it as a steer and check access on the day.

Gljúfrabúi, beside Seljalandsfoss

A waterfall hidden inside a slot canyon a few minutes' walk from the same Seljalandsfoss car park. Many people never notice it and walk straight past. You step into the canyon to see it, so expect wet feet.

Kvernufoss, beside Skógafoss

A short, easy walk from the Skógar museum next to Skógafoss. The quiet twin of the big one, often nearly empty, and you can walk behind it too.

Hofskirkja turf church, at Hof in Öræfi

A small turf church out east near Skaftafell, the last of its kind built. A calm, low key cultural stop rather than a crowd scene.

Hoffellsfjöll, on the way to Höfn

A glacier stop without the crowds. The access track is a little bumpy but can be done without a four wheel drive in good conditions. A genuine glacier view with hardly anyone there.

Stokksnes, just past Höfn

The black sand and mountain view near Höfn that people make a special trip for. A good stop if you are coming this far east. There is usually a small entry fee at the café that controls access.

Reaching the glacier lagoon means most of a day in the car each way. This is the single number people underestimate.

Conditions change fast at the ice. Layers always. Guided trips cancel for weather, and that is the right call.

Cold off the water all year, even in summer. Bring layers. Winter brings road closures on the route, so have a fallback.

How far you can honestly get

One day: turn around at Vík. Two days: the lagoon at a human pace

One day from Reykjavík

Vík is the honest turnaround. That gives you the two famous waterfalls, the black sand beach, and the village, with time to actually stand still at each one. Pushing past Vík and back in a day means driving tired, in the dark for much of the year, and seeing the best part through a windshield.

Two days, one night out

Sleep somewhere around Vík or further east, and the glacier lagoon becomes calm instead of frantic. This is the version most people wish they had booked. Day one to Vík slowly, night out east, day two to the lagoon and back at a human pace.

Booking a winter trip without it falling apart

One or two bases, refundable bookings, one spare day

This is for the December and January traveller who wants the glacier walk and ice cave out at the lagoon, and is worried about getting stuck between booked hotels when a road closes. The honest answer is that you cannot plan the weather away. What you can do is build a plan that bends instead of breaking. Here is how a resident would set it up.

Daylight is the real limit in late December

Around the end of December the South Coast gets roughly four to five hours of usable daylight, with the sun up late morning and gone by mid afternoon. You do not want to be doing the long, exposed leg out to the lagoon in the dark. Treat daylight, not distance, as the thing that sets your driving hours, and check the exact times on the daylight tool before you book anything.

Do not move hotel every single night

The trap that strands people is booking a chain of one night stays, so a single closed road means you cannot reach the next bed. Instead, pick one or two bases and stay put. For the glacier and ice cave, base two nights out east near Skaftafell or Höfn. That gives the weather a second day to cooperate, and if a road closes you are already where you need to be rather than driving toward a room you may not reach.

Book the lagoon early in the trip, not at the end

You are right to worry about this. Put your eastern, glacier part in the first half of the trip and keep the last day or two close to Reykjavík and the airport. If the far east gets weathered out on your planned day, you still have spare days left to try again. If you save the lagoon for the end and a storm closes the road, you have run out of trip. Always leave at least one full night near Keflavík before your flight, so a closure out east never threatens the airport run.

Book a refundable everything, and one buffer day

In winter, book rooms and tours that let you cancel or move without losing money, even if they cost a little more. Then keep one day in the itinerary with nothing booked at all, a buffer for the day the weather takes from you. Guided glacier walks and ice caves cancel for weather, and that is the right call, so a flexible booking and a spare day is what turns a cancellation from a disaster into a reschedule.

The ice cave and glacier walk are guided, from out east

These run only with a licensed guide, mostly meeting near the Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón end, and only in the cold season. Never set foot on a glacier alone. Booking from a base out east, rather than driving from Reykjavík the same morning, is what makes the timing work in short winter daylight.

Check closures the night before and the morning of

road.is for live closures and conditions, vedur.is for wind and storm warnings, and safetravel.is for alerts. In winter the road east does close, sometimes at short notice. If it is closed or an orange or red wind warning is up, you do not drive it, you use your buffer day. That is the plan working, not the plan failing.

Where to break the drive

Selfoss, Hella, Vík, Skaftafell, Höfn

These are options, not recommendations. I have not stayed in these places, and this is not a ranking. It is simply where lodging clusters along the route, so you know what exists at each stop when you plan a night out.

Selfoss and Hella (early on the route)

The first real towns heading east, useful if you arrive late and want to start the drive fresh in the morning rather than the night you land.

Vík (the one day turnaround)

The most common overnight stop. Small, so rooms book out in summer. Staying here is what turns a rushed day into an easy two days.

Skaftafell area (near the glacier)

Fewer options, further apart. Handy if you want an early start on a glacier activity or the lagoon.

Höfn and the glacier lagoon end

The far end for most trips. A small harbour town, useful if you are continuing around the Ring Road rather than turning back.

Two places to eat along the way

Vík is reliable for dinner. Further east, call ahead and carry food

Again, options rather than verdicts, two stops people ask about by name. There is far more food along the route than this. These two simply come up most.

Greenhouse, Hveragerði

Near the start of the drive, in the greenhouse town. Comes up often as a first or last stop. Worth knowing it is there.

Frost, at Fjallsárlón

Out east near a glacier lagoon. A reason to slow down at the far end rather than just photograph and leave.

If you are vegan

Buy groceries at Bónus before you leave Reykjavík. Vík has supermarkets and places with plant based options, but the smaller towns and roadside stops have far less choice, and gaps between them are long. Carry snacks so a closed cafe never decides your day.

Dinner when you stay overnight

The real worry for a night out east is whether you will be stuck with a petrol station hot dog. Here is the honest version, and please check current opening hours yourself, because they shift hard between summer and winter and small places close early or shut entirely off season.

Vík

You are fine here. Vík, roughly 190 km east of Reykjavík, has a proper supermarket (Krónan) for self catering, a fuel stop, and a handful of restaurants and cafes. It is the most reliable place on the route to get a real dinner, though in winter and on quieter evenings the kitchens may close earlier than you expect. If you are arriving late, call ahead or buy groceries before the shop shuts.

Skaftafell and further east

Thinner, and this is where people get caught out. There is no supermarket at Skaftafell itself, just a cafe at the visitor area and the restaurants attached to the hotels and guesthouses scattered along the road. Those hotel kitchens often want bookings, keep short hours, and may not serve non guests on a busy night, so call ahead before you count on them. The nearest full grocery shopping is back in Vík to the west or onward in Höfn to the east, both a real drive away.

The safe move either way: do your shopping in Vík (or at Bónus before you ever leave Reykjavík), carry enough food for one fallback meal, and treat any open restaurant out east as a bonus rather than the plan. That way a closed kitchen never decides your evening.

Fuel, bathrooms, and a quick bite along the way

Fill up in Vík and again at Kirkjubæjarklaustur

You are never far from a petrol station on the main South Coast leg, and most of them double as a toilet stop, a coffee, and a sandwich or hot dog. The thing to know is where they sit, because the gaps grow the further east you go. Top up the tank whenever it drops below half once you are past Vík. Here is roughly where they fall, west to east.

Hveragerði and Selfoss (the first towns)

Hveragerði comes first, then Selfoss a few minutes on. Selfoss is the biggest town on the whole route, with several stations, supermarkets, and proper toilets. This is the natural place for a first stretch, a coffee, and a last big shop before the smaller towns.

Hella and Hvolsvöllur (before the waterfalls)

Both are small roadside towns with fuel, a shop, and a bathroom. Hvolsvöllur is the last proper town before Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, so it is a sensible last stop to fill up and use a clean toilet before the famous waterfalls, where facilities are busier and some charge a small fee.

Vík (the turnaround and the refill point)

Vík has fuel, a supermarket (Krónan), cafes, and toilets. If you are turning back here it is an easy stop. If you are pushing east, treat Vík as the place you fill the tank and use the toilets, because the towns thin out fast after this.

Kirkjubæjarklaustur (the one not to skip)

A small village with a petrol station and shop, sitting in the long stretch between Vík and the glacier end. This is the important one. After Vík it is a fair drive to the next reliable fuel, so a lot of people get caught low here. Fill up at Kirkjubæjarklaustur even if you do not feel you need to.

Skaftafell and Höfn (the far end)

There is a fuel pump and cafe at the Skaftafell visitor area, handy for the glacier stops. Höfn, further east, is a full harbour town with fuel, shops, and restaurants. Between these points the stations are sparse and some are unmanned card only pumps, so keep your fuel card or a chip and PIN card to hand.

Many smaller pumps are automated and unmanned, especially out east and after hours. They need a card with a PIN, and some pre authorise a large amount before settling on what you actually pumped. The driving guide covers how fuel cards and PINs work in more detail.

Roughly what the fuel will cost

Around 8,800 ISK to Vík and back, 18,000 ISK to Jökulsárlón

There is no fixed number, because it depends on the car and the day's pump price, but you can get close. These figures use a working petrol price of about 315 ISK per litre and a normal small rental using roughly 7.5 litres per 100 km. Check the current pump price yourself, it moves week to week.

Reykjavík to Vík and back

About 370 km round trip. Roughly 28 litres, around 8,800 ISK (about 63 USD) in fuel.

Reykjavík to Jökulsárlón and back

About 760 km round trip. Roughly 57 litres, around 18,000 ISK (about 128 USD) in fuel.

A bigger 4x4 or camper drinks more, so add a third or more for those. Two things people forget: the per kilometer road tax (kílómetragjald) is charged on top of fuel, and USD figures use a working rate of 140 ISK per USD and will change. Treat all of this as a planning estimate, not a quote.

The weather decides, not your plan

If the wind is dangerous, change the day

This is the one thing locals know that no itinerary will tell you. If the wind is dangerous, you change the day. You do not push through it.

  • If the wind is high, skip the glacier and the beach.
  • Do the hot spring instead, or take the slower day.
  • Wait out a bad hour over food in Vík.
  • A stop you miss is still there next time. A risk you take in bad weather may not be.

Iceland rewards flexibility. The people who have the best day are the ones who let the weather pick the order.

Mistakes people make

Jökulsárlón in one day, underestimating wind, the waves at Reynisfjara

  • ✕ Driving to Jökulsárlón and back in a single day.
  • ✕ Underestimating the wind, it is the thing that ruins this drive.
  • ✕ Not bringing waterproof trousers, the spray and rain soak you through.
  • ✕ Going too close to the ocean at Reynisfjara.
  • ✕ Packing too many stops into too few hours, and seeing all of them through a windshield.

Reynisfjara is dangerous, treat it that way

The waves at the black sand beach are unpredictable and far stronger than they look. They pull people in. Never turn your back on the sea, never let children run ahead, and stay well back from the waterline. People have died here. Read the on site warning signs and obey them.

There is no Uber here

Uber, Lyft, and Bolt do not exist in Iceland. If you are not driving yourself, this route is a guided tour or nothing. For taxis around the city, Hreyfill (588 5522) or BSR (561 0000), but they do not serve a day on the South Coast.
