Do I need a car in Iceland?

For Reykjavík and the Golden Circle you can manage on tours and buses. For the south coast, the north, or anything off the Ring Road, a car gives you far more control. In winter, book a car only if you are comfortable driving in wind, ice, and sudden closures, and check road conditions the same morning.

Is Iceland expensive?

Yes, by most standards. Expect roughly 3,000 to 5,000 ISK for a casual restaurant main, around 1,200 ISK for a beer, and 25,000 to 40,000 ISK a night for mid range accommodation in summer. Cooking from a Bónus or Krónan supermarket and drinking tap water cuts costs sharply.

Is tap water safe to drink in Iceland?

Yes. Cold tap water is spring water and is safe everywhere in Iceland. Bring a refillable bottle. The hot water smells of sulphur because it is geothermal, which is normal and harmless.

Do I need to tip in Iceland?

No. Service is included in the price at restaurants, bars, and taxis. Tipping is not expected and no one will be offended if you do not.

Is there Uber, Bolt, or Lyft in Iceland?

There is no Uber, Lyft, or Bolt car service in Iceland. Hopp now runs an app based taxi in Reykjavík and at Keflavík airport with licensed local drivers and in app payment, and it works without an Icelandic ID. You can also call Hreyfill on 588 5522 or BSR on 561 0000.

What should I pack for Iceland?

Waterproof outer layers with a hood that survives wind, warm mid layers, waterproof walking shoes, a swimsuit for the pools, and a refillable water bottle. Umbrellas are useless here because the rain arrives sideways.

What is the emergency number in Iceland?

112 for police, ambulance, fire, and mountain rescue, from any phone with or without a SIM. The 112 Iceland app can also send your location to rescue teams.

How many days do you need in Iceland?

Five days is the sweet spot for a first visit: Reykjavík, the Golden Circle, the south coast, and a spare day for weather. Three days works if you stay near the capital. Ten days or more lets you attempt the full Ring Road without rushing.

The Met Office has warnings out for almost the whole country. Wind 15 to 25 m/s with stronger gusts, heavy rain, and snow on higher ground.

• Reykjavík and the South: worst 06:00 to 11:00. Delay early drives and tours.
• Southwest (Reykjanes, airport road): wind until 23:00.
• Westfjords and Northwest: orange snowstorm from evening into Thursday. Do not drive.
• Eastfjords: landslide risk. Keep away from steep slopes and rivers.
• Check with your tour operator, and tie down or bring in anything loose.
